Chestnut Hill

Philadelphia's most eclectic shopping corridor runs for six blocks through one of the city's most culturally vibrant neighborhoods. Vintage clothing, independent record stores, tattoo studios, galleries, and one-of-a-kind boutiques define a street that's been countercultural since the 1960s.

Shopping Chestnut Hill

Chestnut Hill sits at the northwestern tip of Philadelphia, and it feels like a different world from the rest of the city. Germantown Avenue — the main commercial street — is a cobblestone thoroughfare lined with tree-shaded sidewalks, historic stone buildings, and some of the best independent shopping in the region.

The shopping district stretches roughly ten blocks along Germantown Avenue from Bethlehem Pike to Northwestern Avenue, with the densest concentration between Hartwell Lane and Evergreen Avenue. Nearly every business here is independent and locally owned. Chain stores are rare — this is a neighborhood that takes real pride in its small businesses.

Consignment Capital

What Chestnut Hill specializes in is upscale consignment, independent bookshops, gourmet food, and home furnishings. It's the neighborhood where Main Line residents bring their current-season designer clothes to consign, which means the consignment selection is among the best in the country. Designer labels at 60–80% off retail are common.

💡 Consignment Strategy

Visit Greene Street Consignment and Trappings on the same day — they're a block apart on Germantown Avenue. Go on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings when the stock is freshest from weekend drop-offs. The best pieces sell fast, so don't hesitate if you find something you love.

Getting There

Chestnut Hill has two SEPTA Regional Rail stops — Chestnut Hill East and Chestnut Hill West. Both drop you within walking distance of the shopping district. By car, free 2-hour street parking on Germantown Avenue makes Chestnut Hill unusually car-friendly compared to Center City.

☕ Make It a Day

Chestnut Hill is a full-day destination. Start with coffee at Cake or High Point Cafe, shop the consignment stores, grab lunch at McNally's Tavern (order the Schmitter), hit the bookshops, and end with pastries at Night Kitchen Bakery before the train home.
