Insider Guide
Shopping South Street
South Street has been Philadelphia's countercultural heartbeat since the late 1960s, when artists, musicians, and activists turned this then-depressed corridor into a hub of alternative culture. The street was famously referenced in the 1963 song "South Street" by The Orlons, and it's retained its bohemian identity across six decades of cultural change.
The main shopping stretch runs from Front Street at the Delaware River waterfront end through 8th Street, with the highest concentration of independent shops between 3rd and 6th Streets. The neighborhood surrounding South Street — Queen Village and Bella Vista — is one of Philadelphia's most desirable residential areas, giving the street a neighborhood feel beneath its commercial surface.
What You'll Find
South Street is defined by its independent spirit. There are virtually no chain stores — the entire strip is made up of locally owned businesses, many of which have operated for decades. Vintage clothing shops, record stores, tattoo parlors, head shops, piercing studios, and art galleries sit alongside excellent restaurants, dive bars, and one-of-a-kind boutiques.
South Street comes alive in the evening. Many shops don't open until noon and are at their best from 3pm onwards. Weekend evenings bring a lively street scene with pedestrians, outdoor diners, and street performers.
First Friday Connection
The first Friday of every month, South Street's galleries participate in the broader Philadelphia First Friday art walk. Galleries extend their hours, many offer free wine and refreshments, and the street is at its most vibrant. If you can time a visit to a First Friday, it's the definitive South Street experience.
South Street has no direct SEPTA rail stop. Take the Broad Street Line to Ellsworth-Federal and walk east, or take bus routes 40 or 57 directly along South Street. Street parking is metered and available on side streets.
