Shopping Rittenhouse Row

Rittenhouse Row is the name given to the stretch of Walnut Street that runs through Center City's most affluent neighborhood. Named for the nearby Rittenhouse Square — one of William Penn's original five squares — this corridor has evolved over decades into Philadelphia's undisputed luxury retail destination.

The street runs roughly six blocks, from Broad Street at the east end to 20th Street at the west, with the highest concentration of shops between 16th and 18th Streets. Unlike a mall, everything here exists on the street level of historic row homes and mid-century buildings, giving it a walkable, neighborhood feel even at the city's most upscale address.

What to Expect

The mix skews heavily toward women's fashion and jewelry, though there's solid representation in men's clothing, home furnishings, and beauty. National brands like Anthropologie, Free People, and lululemon anchor the strip, but the most interesting shopping is at the independent boutiques that have called Walnut Street home for decades — places like Joan Shepp, which has been dressing Philadelphians in avant-garde European fashion since the 1990s.

💡 Local Tip

Visit on a weekday morning for the best experience — parking is easier, stores aren't crowded, and staff have time to actually help you. Weekend afternoons in spring and fall get very busy.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are peak seasons when new collections arrive and the neighborhood is at its liveliest. The annual Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival typically takes place in May and closes Walnut Street to traffic, with pop-up vendors and live music.

Getting There & Parking

The easiest transit option is the Market-Frankford Line to 15th Street, then a short walk south on 15th to Walnut. By car, the Rittenhouse Square Parking Garage on 18th Street between Walnut and Sansom is the most convenient. Street parking on side streets is metered and available but competitive on weekends.

🅿️ Parking Tip

The parking garage at 18th & Sansom validates for several nearby restaurants — if you're combining shopping with lunch, ask your restaurant if they validate before paying for parking separately.

Beyond Shopping

After shopping, Rittenhouse Square itself is worth a stroll — it's one of the most beautiful urban parks in the country. The surrounding blocks are dense with excellent restaurants and cafes. Parc on the square, a French brasserie with outdoor seating, is the quintessential Rittenhouse experience and a perfect end to a day of shopping.
