Insider Guide
Shopping Jewelers' Row
Philadelphia's Jewelers' Row dates to 1851, when the city's first jewelry retailers clustered on Sansom Street to serve the prosperous merchant class of the nation's then-financial capital. The district has remained on the same block for over 170 years, making it the oldest continuously operating jewelry district in America.
The concentration of dealers on a single block creates a genuinely competitive marketplace. Unlike retail jewelry in a mall, the proximity of 300+ merchants means prices are negotiable and buyers have real leverage. The district serves both retail customers and the trade — many dealers are primarily wholesale, but most are happy to sell retail to serious buyers.
Shopping for an Engagement Ring
Jewelers' Row is the smartest place in Philadelphia to buy an engagement ring. The combination of competition, volume, and expertise means you'll consistently find better prices and selection than at mall jewelry stores. Come educated — know the four Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat), have a budget in mind, and don't be afraid to visit multiple dealers.
Visit at least 4–5 dealers before deciding. Prices on comparable stones vary significantly between vendors. Get written appraisals, ask about certification (GIA is the gold standard), and don't feel pressured by any single dealer.
Estate and Vintage Jewelry
Several dealers on and near Jewelers' Row specialize in antique and estate jewelry — pieces from the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco periods. This material is increasingly sought-after and genuinely scarce, so the dealers who specialize in it tend to be particularly knowledgeable.
Weekday mornings are best — dealers have more time to talk, explain their stock, and negotiate. Avoid Saturday afternoons when the Row is at its busiest and dealers are focused on the volume of traffic.
