Shopping East Passyunk
East Passyunk Avenue is South Philadelphia's answer to the city's more polished shopping corridors. The diagonal street cuts across the grid of South Philly between Broad Street and Dickinson, and over the past 15 years it has transformed from a quiet Italian neighborhood into one of the city's most dynamic dining and retail destinations.
The main shopping stretch runs from Broad Street down to the Singing Fountain at Tasker, with the highest concentration of boutiques, restaurants, and specialty shops between 11th and 13th. It's a neighborhood that locals fiercely defend — most of the businesses here are owned by people who live within a few blocks.
Food Meets Retail
What East Passyunk does best is combine food and shopping. The restaurant scene is among Philadelphia's best — you can spend a full day browsing shops, stopping for coffee, having lunch at a BYOB, browsing more, and ending with dinner at one of the nationally recognized restaurants on the avenue.
Plan a long afternoon. Start with coffee, hit the shops between 11th and 13th, lunch at Bing Bing Dim Sum, more browsing, drinks at a corner bar, and dinner at Laurel, Sor Ynez, or Fond. It's the quintessential East Passyunk day.
Getting There
The Tasker-Morris stop on the Broad Street Line is a short walk east to the avenue. By car, street parking is abundant on side streets compared to Center City — most blocks have meters that cap out at $1/hour, and many blocks are free on weekends.
Once a year in May, the Italian Market Festival takes over 9th Street just west of Passyunk. Plan a weekend visit around it — you can do the festival in the morning and hit East Passyunk shops and restaurants in the afternoon.
