How Philly's Indie Boutiques Work

The independent shops below are owner-run and owner-bought. Someone in the store chose every rack, and several of them make their own label or their own jewelry. That changes how you should shop them. Ask what just came in, ask what they are reordering, and ask who else carries a brand you like. Two stores in this guide stock the same Indian label, Kartik Research, which tells you something about how small this scene is.

When to go

Indie hours start late and vary by day, so plan around them. Most of these shops open between 10am and noon. Franklin & Poe and FavAUrite are closed Monday, Kin and Vestige post no Monday hours, and Boyds is closed Sunday. Rebel and Junior's close early on Saturday. Cadrae works by appointment only. The safest window for a multi-neighborhood day is Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 5pm.

How we picked

Every shop here was confirmed open this month on its own website, its district listing or recent coverage. We left out several boutiques that older guides still recommend because we could not confirm they are still trading at the address listed.

Rittenhouse: Designer Floors and Made-to-Measure

The Rittenhouse independents sit within a few blocks of the square and cover the top of the market. Do them on foot in two hours.

Joan Shepp

Joan Shepp (1905 Walnut St) is the high-end designer store run by founder Joan Shepp and her daughter Ellen. The labels include Comme des Garçons, Y-3, Sacai, Maison Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens and Acne Studios. Philadelphia magazine named it 2026's Best Retail Reinvention after the move from Chestnut Street to Rittenhouse, noting a sharper focus on exclusives and emerging names, including Lemaire as a regional exclusive and Kartik Research. Look for Fornasetti and Seletti home pieces too. Hours are Monday to Saturday 11am to 6pm and Sunday noon to 5pm.

Boyds

Boyds (1818 Chestnut St) is family-owned, with women's and men's designer departments under one roof. Women's runs to Chloé, TOTEME, Victoria Beckham, Moncler and Christian Louboutin; men's to Brunello Cucinelli, ISAIA, Zegna, Tom Ford and Santoni. Boyds also has an in-house tailor shop, made-to-measure, personal shoppers and trunk shows; request an appointment through its site. It is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 6pm and closed Sunday.

Rebel

Rebel (116 S 19th St) is where to go for jeans. Philadelphia magazine named it 2025's Best Place to Shop for Jeans, and it carries AG, Pistola and Hidden denim alongside contemporary labels like Zadig & Voltaire, Ramy Brook and Alice + Olivia. Hours are Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm and Saturday 11am to 5pm.

Junior's

Junior's (260 S 16th St) is the menswear shop Glenn Au started in 2020, with American-made clothing and Alden shoes by special order. Its made-to-measure starting prices are posted: suits $1,195, sport coats $1,095, trousers $345 and shirts from $215. Cloth comes from mills including Fox Brothers, Holland & Sherry, Harris Tweed and Lovat. Typical delivery is four to six weeks, followed by a fitting; shirts take about four. Walk-ins and appointments are both welcome; it is closed Wednesday and Sunday.

Old City and Pine Street: Local Labels and Custom Suits

Vagabond Boutique

Vagabond Boutique (37 N 3rd St) is a women's boutique with clothing, jewelry, home goods and apothecary. Its Stellapop knits are made in Philadelphia from Nebraska wool. The chunky cardigan is $295 and takes about three weeks to make. Hours are Monday to Saturday 11am to 6pm and Sunday noon to 5pm.

Cadrae

Cadrae (72 N 2nd St) is a made-to-measure suit studio, by appointment only. Philadelphia magazine named it 2026's Best Custom Suit. The first consultation is free and covers cut, fabric and price, then you come back for measurements and fittings. It will also tailor clothes you already own, and it runs a wedding service for grooms and parties. Book through its site.

Kin

Kin (1010 Pine St) is a contemporary boutique on Pine Street. It stocks AGOLDE denim, Donni, Sancia and Closed, and offers personal wardrobe styling. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday noon to 7pm and Sunday noon to 6pm.

South Street and Fabric Row: Streetwear and Jewelry

Ps & Qs

Ps & Qs (820 South St) is the streetwear stop: Carhartt WIP, Stüssy, Universal Works, Rains and Topo Designs, plus New Balance, Saucony, Diadora and NPS Solovair for shoes. It also sells its own P's & Q's Brand line. Hours are Monday to Saturday noon to 7pm and Sunday noon to 6pm.

Moon + Arrow

On the Fabric Row block of 4th Street, Moon + Arrow (742 S 4th St) has been open 15 years and is strongest on jewelry. It makes its own Moon + Arrow line and stocks small designers like Emilie Shapiro, Satomi Studio, Fond and Ella Gluckman, plus gifts from Areaware and Wonder Valley. It is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm. The vintage shops on the same block are covered in our vintage guide.

Fishtown: Japanese Denim and Quiet Designer Labels

Frankford Avenue has two of the city's most focused boutiques, about a 20-minute walk apart.

Franklin & Poe

Franklin & Poe (1339 Frankford Ave) is heritage menswear for people who care about selvedge and stitch counts. The denim is Japanese and American: Iron Heart, Pure Blue Japan, Samurai, Sugar Cane, The Flat Head and 3sixteen. Outerwear runs to Buzz Rickson's and Schott NYC, and the boot selection covers Red Wing Heritage, White's, Wesco, John Lofgren and Alden. There is a house Franklin & Poe label too. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 6pm and Sunday noon to 5pm; closed Monday.

Vestige

Further up the avenue, Vestige (2041 Frankford Ave) is womenswear for the quiet-luxury reader: Bode, Lauren Manoogian, Jamie Haller, Kallmeyer, Róhe, Cristaseya, Extreme Cashmere and Mary MacGill, plus Kartik Research. It is open Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday 11am to 6pm, and Wednesday until 7pm.

Chestnut Hill: The New One on the Avenue

FavAUrite (8409 Germantown Ave) was Philadelphia magazine's Best New Boutique of 2026. Three women run it as a mix of jewelry (some made in house), antiques and home goods, with some apparel under FAV Apparel. Jewelry designers include Tura Sugden, Sia Taylor and Hannah Blount, and you will find Catherine Sieck candles and Sharland England ceramics. The windows change often. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 3pm, and the shop notes they can change, so check before the drive.

One Saturday, Three Neighborhoods

Start at noon in Fishtown at Franklin & Poe, then walk up Frankford Avenue to Vestige. Take a car or the El to Old City for Vagabond, then walk south to Kin on Pine Street and Ps & Qs and Moon + Arrow around South Street. Finish in Rittenhouse at Joan Shepp and Boyds before 5pm on a Saturday, since Rebel and Junior's close earlier. For made-to-measure at Cadrae or Junior's, book the appointment first and build the day around it.
